Get Ready for Summer with Outdoor Audio, Video, and Lighting
It’s Time to Take the Entertainment Outside
No one needs to be reminded that we've had plenty of time indoors in the Bay Area this year. And while Northern California enjoys great year-round weather overall, summer is here with its extremely predictable long and sunny days.
Last month we talked about some ways of livening up your indoor entertainment with active options like golf and sports simulators. This month we want to explore ways of turning your outdoor spaces into another entertainment zone to enjoy the great weather.

Music enhances any entertainment experience. Whether you’re relaxing in the sun, frolicking in the pool, or grilling a summer meal in the outdoor kitchen, your music adds the right soundtrack.
A huge variety of outdoor speakers exist to provide high-quality sound outdoors. For your patio, you can have in-ceiling speakers or surface-mount models that mount to the wall or tuck under an eave. For landscaped areas like beds and gardens, you can spread even sound over a large area with spike mounted satellite speakers that easily hide among the plants. For extra bass, buried subwoofers will add low-end punch that will be heard and felt, but not seen.
Around pools and water features, "rock" speakers are a popular option. They look like rocks, and their sturdy and weatherproof housings make them an excellent choice around wet areas, blending well into the landscape design. Another option is a bollard style, which is like a tower speaker for the outdoors. Their modern style blends well with contemporary landscapes, and they provide powerful sound with multiple drivers that may include built-in subwoofers.
Why stop at sound for outdoor entertainment? When the sun starts to fade, outdoor TV lets you take your favorite shows and movies outside to relax. Don’t think that you can’t watch during the day, however. A variety of models let you watch in different lighting conditions. Some models are optimized for full shade, like a large covered patio, some for partial shade, and some are bright enough with special non-glare screens that are usable in full sun. Regardless of the model, all outdoor TVs are built to withstand the elements, be they heat, cold, dust, water, and even insects.
Lighting is another feature that can make or break the ambiance. When the sun fades, extend the use of your outside spaces with the right lighting. Add drama by using up-lights on your beautiful trees. Light walkways softly with in-ground path lights. For additional fun, use color-changing lights to set up a festive atmosphere for an outdoor party, or change the colors in your pool and water features for endlessly entertaining effects.
To control your lighting – and the rest of your outdoor system – it's wise to invest in a smart home system like Control4. With one interface, like an app on your smartphone or a dedicated touchscreen, you can control the lights, select TV and music content, control volume, and much more. You can even set a scene where the lights, music, and spa heater are all set to your preferred settings for a relaxing evening soak.
